Why Helium Is the Preferred Gas for Industrial Leak Detection
Leak testing is a measurement, and helium is the tracer that produces a usable number over the widest range. A mass spectrometer leak detector tuned to mass 4 resolves rates from gross leaks down to around 1 x 10 to the minus 11 mbar L/s, which means one instrument and one gas cover eight decades of leak size.
Four properties do the work. Helium is the smallest atom after hydrogen, so it enters paths that stop other gases. It is chemically inert and will not react with the part under test. It is non-flammable and non-toxic at the concentrations used. Ambient air holds only about 5 ppm helium, which leaves a low enough background to read a small signal against.
One limitation is worth knowing before you write a test spec. Helium permeates some elastomers and plastics, so on parts with O-rings or polymer housings the gas can pass through the material itself and register as a leak that is not there. Dwell times and reject limits have to account for it.

Vacuum Leak Testing
Helium provides highly sensitive vacuum leak detection. The component is evacuated while helium is sprayed around joints and connections, allowing the detector to quickly identify leaks and pinpoint their location. Calibrated systems can detect leaks down to approximately 10⁻¹¹ mbar L/s.
Pressure Testing
Pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and pipe spools can be charged with helium or a helium-nitrogen mix and checked externally with a sniffer probe. Accumulation testing offers an alternative by collecting helium around the suspected leak for improved sensitivity.
Refrigeration & HVAC Systems
Refrigeration and HVAC manufacturers use helium, often mixed with nitrogen, to detect leaks in coils, compressors, and evaporators. Service teams can also pressurize systems with helium to locate faults before refrigerant charging, reducing unnecessary refrigerant loss.

Yes, and it is standard practice on production lines. Diluting to 10 percent helium in nitrogen cuts helium consumption by 90 percent. The trade is that the reject limit has to tighten by the same factor: a part specified at 1 x 10 to the minus 5 atm cc/s on pure helium is tested at 1 x 10 to the minus 6 on a 10 percent mix, because only a tenth of the gas passing through the leak is helium. A 10 percent mix still supports detection near 10 to the minus 7 mbar L/s, which covers most commercial work. We blend to specification and deliver the mix ready to use.
The three scales in common use are close but not interchangeable. 1 mbar L/s is about 0.99 atm cc/s and 0.1 Pa m3/s. So mbar L/s and atm cc/s can be treated as roughly equal in practice, while swapping either of them with Pa m3/s introduces a factor of ten. Standard cc per second (sccs) is effectively the same as atm cc/s. Confirm which unit a drawing or specification uses before you set a reject limit.
